Known for its Cathedral, it’s amazing to discover this monument  when you are still miles away. Ordered by the bishop Fulbert, this Sanctuary was built with the financial help of the king of France , the count of Chartres , the Duke of Normandy and the king of England . It’s    a masterpiece of both Gothic and   Romanesque arts. A gorgeous facade known for its statues-columns, one the last mazes, the largest crypt of the Christian world would almost  make you forget about its incredibly rich stain glasses.

 Stained-glass is very much a French art and Chartres accounts for 23,000 sq feet of this gorgeous art form spread over 170 windows, all of them dating from 13th century.
 Unique is the famous “Bleu de Chartres”, a luminous cobalt blue, a colour that was never been reproduced in glass-staining till very recently.

A stroll through the medieval streets and by the edge of the river will make you enjoy the charm of Chartres even more . From April to September, (check exact dates) after night fall, a light show brings colors over curiosities and marvels of the town center. A truly fantastic sight.

Chartres may also come after or before a visit to Versailles or Maintenon, It might also be your first stop on the way to the Loire Chateaus.
